Boys golf had an above average season. A large impact on the team has been the acquisition of Freshman, Cash Renfro who has played varsity this year. Being the only freshman on varsity must be difficult. While being a freshman, Renfro has been apart of a team that finished 11-6 this season and 3-3 in conference which is an improvement from last year, where the team finished 6-9.
Renfro describes the experience as “overall amazing and I cannot ask for anything better”, which he is overall enjoying the team and the accomplishments of his individual goals but as well as the team goals. He describes some of the ups and downs of the team, as well including the defeat to Anderson, and a overall last place finish at King of the Hill.
At one point, the team was on a six match win streak which launched them into the first place spot replacing Loveland. This then put the Spartans in the ten slot of the overall city rankings. Then followed by a heartbreaking loss to the Anderson Redskins. Turpin bounced back with victories over Kings and Glen Este, but have recently fallen into a three match slump, where they have been outshot by 29 strokes.
The team has made serious progress throughout the season. Renfro has said that “being an underclassman, especially a freshman, can be very intimidating in various situations but being younger allows me to look up to the upperclassman for guidance especially when it is not my day. The group just has a feeling like no other and they all help each other in situations when one person cannot think about what they should do on something like a difficult hole by themselves.” You can tell that the Spartan golfers have excelled this season on the tees.
The team finished its season as they traveled to face all the ECC golf teams on Thursday, October 1st. The biggest competition throughout was Anderson, Milford and Loveland. Then the Spartans headed to sectionals on Tuesday October, 6th. Senior, Connor Lambert played well at sectionals where he then earned a spot to advance to the District playoffs. He would fall at this stage with great effort. Thanks’ Connor for making the Spartans proud.
The season overall was a sucsess. With some leadership and young talent, the season ended up being overall more enjoyable for the coaches and players. With a key win over rival Anderson, the season was even more sweet. Lambert, finishing in the top half of the the pool at sectionals earned him a ticket to Districts. This season was great for the team and make sure to congradulate them.
