As the winter sports begin the start, the wrestling team is gearing up for a potentially good season. Led by Senior Ben Rackley, the team looks to expand on last year’s season. With a memorable close match last year at King of the Hill against Anderson, the Spartans are seeking revenge. The Spartans will prepare for what will be a tough season, which includes at least two invitationals.
Sophomore John McGuire looks to expand on a successful freshman season where he finished third in the 120-pound weight class. “The season is hard work but overall it is worth it when the ref raises your arm after winning a match,” said McGuire.
McGuire who looks to wrestle in the 126-pound weight class will work hard to contribute to the team this year. He believes that this team has a chance to place at Batavia and Xenia Invitationals, both of which the team came close to this past year.
“This team is like a family, in the sense that we work very hard together for the overall benefit of the team. If we keep the same intensity of last year, we have a true shot at doing very well,” McGuire added.
Notable returns to the team include Sophomore Harry Sand, who finished first in the 106-pound weight class within the ECC, accumulating over 30 wins.
Rackley, who finished second in the ECC with 26 wins last year, will sure make a push for state, as this is his senior year.
Under the direction of Head Coach Kyle Georg, the Spartan wrestlers will be pushed to their limits. With hard work, this small team can be dangerous to anyone who underestimates them. For the first time in many years, the team will have a full varsity roster, which will increase this teams chances on placing at many different events.
Good luck to this team as their season progresses.
